Punjab of the Present

The combination of ‘Punj’ & ‘Aab’ stands for a land of five rivers. Situated in the north west of India, Punjab has always come in the way of invaders from the North. And thus, Punjab had to take a lot of battle ring from the invaders. Through the centuries, Punjab had been a sword arm of India.

The Muslim rulers occupied Punjab in 1027 and the British in 1849. It developed into a separate province in 1937. Punjab probably suffered the most, at the time of the unforgotten Indo-Pak partition that resulted in Punjab no longer having five rivers, but only three.

Punjab has been partitioned three times. In 1947 after Independence it was divided in two parts and the old capital Lahore fell to Pakistan's share. It was partitioned again on the basis of language on 15th April 1948 when Himachal Pradesh was created with three hill districts and the free native states. On 1st November 1966 it was divided once more and the new state of Haryana was cut out of it.

A curious fact is that, Chandigarh on the frontier between the two states accommodates both secretariats and is the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. Still, Chandigarh does not belong to either states but it’s a Union Territory, under the control of the Central Government.

Punjabis are determined hard-workers with a progressive attitude. They have withstood all challenges & have excelled in various fields. It is because of the enterprising qualities of the Punjabis that Punjab, with only 1.5 percent geographical area of India is contributing 70 percent of wheat and 48 percent of rice to the national pool.

Punjabis are the ‘warmest’ Indians, their highly assimilative nature & hospitality makes them popular all around the world. The folk dance of Punjab ‘Bhangra’ today has become famous all over the world. Punjabi Salwar-Kameez and Dupatta and Punjabi Jutti are not only seen in Punjab, but also in various other parts of the world.

Not just the clothes, Punjabi food also has its own unique qualities. The unmatchable taste of ‘Sarson Ka Saag’ and 'Makki Ki Roti’ has led them to capture not only the tongues but also the hearts of the people, all over India.

Punjabis celebrate all the festivals with much fun and frolic. Whether it is Diwali, Dussera, Holi or Lohri, the festivals have their own charm in Punjab. Each festival marks happiness, prosperity & brotherhood in Punjab.

Always referred to as ‘Punjabi Taste’, Punjabi music, food, style, language, dress & culture are widely famous and accepted, that is why it is now becoming fairly uniform Indian taste with Punjab now existing in every heart in & around the world.

Punjab is linked with superfast trains, connecting the whole of the country from Jammu to Kanya Kumari & from Amritsar to Calcutta, day & night. Punjab is also linked by a highway from Delhi to Punjab. The efficient bus service in Punjab connects the entire state with the neighbouring cities and states.
